Going Viral (…Sort Of)

I was hoping to have some more progress on another product for you this week…

But, unfortunately, I’m still working on the fulfillment of the Titanium Mechanical Pencil and Titanium Tweezers V2.0 for Kickstarter projects.

So instead I thought I’d share some cool photos and videos I’ve been posting to Instagram and my YouTube Channel throughout this last week.

I’ll do this in a “Question and Answer” style:

“Magnus, What Does Your Desk Setup Look Like?”

Well, I usually work from the cafe in the morning. And that looks something like this…

The usual cafe I work in. Two laptops and a coffee ...and I'm set for a full day in there.

And, later in the afternoon (and into the evening), I continue to work from home with this setup…

Doing more and more video recently (hence the NEED for a Apple MacBook). And recently becoming obsessed with camera lenses too.

“Magnus, Are You Still Making A Knife?”

The short answer is:

Yes!

The long answer is:

I’ve not been able to make further progress without a manual/cnc milling machine to prototype.

Here’s the thing…

I quickly found out that I can’t get very far with just a water-jet cutter and hand-tools (well, not for the sort of knife I want to make!).

So, yeah, it’s on hold right now unfortunately.

In the meantime I’ve been “researching” (which is my guilt-free word for buying :-P) other knives. Here’s a nice little example:

I used to see people posting photos of coffee and knifes. I used not get it ...until I bought this very cool knife (I think it's a Marfione Sigil - can't remember).

“Magnus, What Was That ‘Magic Mouse’ Thing On Instagram All About?”

Okay, so I’ll start right at the beginning (in case you’ve missed the action)…

I post on Instagram at least once a day. If you’re not familiar with Instagram (and I know a lot of people reading this are not aware what it is) …it’s basically an App on your phone where you can upload photos and videos quickly and easily.

People can comment and ‘like’ it and easily share it with others. I stayed away from it for a long time because I’m not into social media type stuff really …but, boy, was that a mistake. It’s so much more than that.

Here’s a screenshot of my profile on Instagram:

Even if, like me, you are not into "social media" ...Instagram is something I recommend you take a look at anyway.

Anyway, I got bored last Saturday and decided to chop my Apple ‘Magic Mouse’ in half (that’s the computer mouse for my Apple computer).

I took a video of it being cut and showed the “internals” of the mouse. And, well, it went kind of semi-viral (certainly compared to anything I’ve posted before).

Actually, here a better explanation for you:

So, yeah, I’ve started cutting some other stuff now as well.

More on this later…

This could be the new “Will it Blend?”

  • Rockgranite says:

So is it your cafe? Do they let you sit there and work for free or do you have to buy something? Can you sit there for 8 hours and pay for a cup of coffee? Don’t people both you and want your autograph? Is it cold there inside the cafe (is that why you have the vest on)? Don’t people question why a man that makes so many cool things works from a cafe and a room in his house and doesn’t have a workshop? (Or maybe I missed that – seems to me I remember something about a workshop or similar in a previous post). What do you eat for breakfast? And when is the titanium wallet and knife going to be done?????!!!!! PS: I was a contributor to the titanium tweezers (amongst other projects – I still need to by a couple of more pillpots to make my setup correct – rock on Magnus!)

    • Not my cafe ..but I can sit there as long as I want …especially since I buy a lot of coffee and food from them.

Some days I’ll do 7am to 4pm …in my corner …no body knows (or cares) who I am or what I do. They’re busy with their own lives 🙂

I do go to the workshop most days also …but most of the work I must do is computer/online stuff (like replying to this comment right now for example).

Breakfast varies. Sometimes nothing and sometimes, perhaps, bacon and eggs.

Titanium knife is a long way off for sure. The wallet is a few weeks away.

Have you seen the hydraulic press channel? They have a huge following on reddit.

  • Ken says:

So, can I get one of those iPod stands that you made about a week ago?

  • Kane says:

Click bait emails, sales pages that sound like an American infomercial and full screen pop ups on the site. You don’t need to use these annoying tactics to sell your products, they speak for themselves.

And now you have had success with a video you’ll be wasting time cutting things in half trying to go viral to increase back links through the vids.

However, the biggest no-no was using comic sans in the video. You aren’t a 12 year old running a lemonade stand.

Trust yourself, trust your products and trust us to read your blog without an email with “OMG, I nearly destroyed humanity, see how this happened” in the text. It’s just not necessary and it demeans the people who buy your stuff. The Buzzfeed/Infomercial style is for the demographic that don’t buy your products. Mainly because they are either 12, 80 or retained women who watch the shopping channel all day.

Please don’t undermine what you do.
