A Real “FREAKY” Titanium Prototype

You know it’s funny…

Quite often, you have a bright idea …you make it come to life …and it works out just as planned.

Then there are other times when — even though it makes perfect sense in your head — you bring it from idea to it’s physical manifestation …and it’s kinda different.

Actually, scratch that, it’s waaaaaay different!

Today I’m going to reveal one of these such “ideas”.

Feast your eyes on what I’m tentatively calling the “Pincer™”:

Cogent Pincer

Cogent Pincer

Cogent Pincer

Cogent Pincer

Yes, you got it, I merged tweezers with HookUp™ clip!

Here’s the thing…

Even though this design currently kinda freaks me out …I think it’s starting to grow on me a little.

I’d really like to hear your thoughts on this …because, well, a lot of what I create (and don’t create) comes from direct feedback from YOU.

I’m serious (hell, the Rabbit™ key-holder concept was born out of Backer comments during the ViperFish™ project).

One last thing…

It performs very well! I’ve had it on my key-chain for the last few weeks.

SCANDAL: Cogent Gets Ripped-Off!

It’s finally happened…

Took a little longer than I thought – but, well, take a look at this:

A poor ViperFish "copy" found on eBay...

How cool is that?

Someone thought the ViperFish™ was cool enough to copy the design and manufacture it (although they’ve really missed a lot out …well, they did it in hum-drum stainless-steel for a start!). I take it as a huge compliment. It’s flattering.

But here’s the thing…

Their “copy” is not even close to the original ViperFish™. In fact, they’ve missed a lot of the important stuff that makes the ViperFish™, well, The ViperFish™!

Here’s some of the things they’ve missed:

  • Made from Grade 5 Titanium
  • Laser-engraved “ViperFish” logo
  • Awesome packaging (like you’ve never seen before!)
  • Flawless Matte finish
  • Unconditional lifetime guarantee
  • …and a ton of other stuff.

It’s a real shame for someone who stumbles across this “copy” of the ViperFish™ and buys it.

They may think it’s the best thing since sliced-bread …yet they would have no idea the high-end, original ViperFish™ is available right here (…and for a reassuringly much higher price than the $5 they paid!)

Is there a lesson here?

Yes, I believe so. We’ve all heard it before – but it really is true…

You get what you pay for in life (…especially if it’s titanium! 😛 )

“What To Do …When You Don’t Know What To Do!”

wu-pic-1

Okay, here’s the deal…

I thought it was about time to give you another update.

But, the problem is, as I’m starting to write this I have absolutely no idea what to write about.

I’m serious here! I typically have a ton of things buzzing around my mind …but today there is just NOTHING.

You’ve experienced this before, right? No creativity. No ideas. And perhaps even no motivation. It seems to be a natural ebb and flow of how our brains work as humans.

Sometimes we feel like we’re brain-dead …and other times we’re fizzing, bubbling and ready to explode with ideas. I’m sure there are “triggers” to help force our brains to become creative or motivated with a flick-of-a-switch. But I’ve not found it yet! (Although the closest I’ve experienced is John Cleese’s excellent talk on creativity here)

So, here you are…

You’re reading this and perhaps thinking, “Magnus, you can’t fool me! You’re saying you don’t know what to write about, but I secretly know you’ve got something awesome to tell me!”

Seriously, I don’t. I’m writing this for purely selfish reasons. 🙂

Here’s why…

I’m having one of those “non-creative” and “no motivation” days. They are unavoidable. So, what I decided to do is write. Or, more specifically, write this exact update to you.

You might like this:

The #1 reason for writing this to you is because it’s therapeutic (and you thought I did it purely for your benefit? …well, okay, there is a bit of that too!). Writing can often be “a massage for the mind”. I’m serious.

Writing is one of those things that focuses your mind and can get you out of a “mental slump”. And I’m not talking Shakespeare here! (hell, look at this last sentence, I started it with the word “And” …this would make any English teacher shudder!).

You WILL like this:

The #2 reason for sitting down and writing is because it’s important to just do something.

Whether it’s writing …or designing titanium products …or whatever …actually doing something (anything!) is the absolute best way to start when you don’t know where to start.

Want an example?

Well, what I’ve just written to you is a perfect example. The title of this article (can I call it an article?) has only just come to me just now: “What To Do …When You Don’t Know What To Do!”

But, here’s the thing…

Just 20 minutes ago I had no idea what to write about – but I just started typing. Somehow, as if by magic, your brain starts to get “into gear”.

I know, you may not be convinced, but next time you’re “stuck” or not “in the zone”. How about you just go for it and start. Try it …for me! 🙂

Talk to you soon,

Magnus

P.S. One more thing… We’ve almost reached $30,000 in funding on the Titanium HookUp™ Project on Kickstarter. Unbelievable!

P.P.S. The three current products on my website have been selling like hotcakes …so, in case you somehow missed them 🙂 …check out the HangKey™ key pocket-clip/dangler …the PryMal™ minimalist pry-bar …and the ViperFish™ multi-function pocket-tool.

“What Do YOU Want In A Wallet?”

You may not believe this, but…

I’ve had more requests from people (via Kickstarter) to produce a wallet than anything else. And I think I know why!

The main reason is because, although there have literally been one or two hundred wallets on Kickstarter (yes, I have seen every one of them!), there has not been a single one that ticks all the right boxes for most folks.

Personally, I have found this to be the case. Like I said, I’ve seen every wallet on Kickstarter – but not a single one has been close to what I NEED. Very frustrating. Have you found this?

Here’s where YOU come in…

I have been working on a wallet for some time now – and finally have the main concept done (…as well as a VERY functional prototype).

What YOU need to do is tell me exactly what you want in a wallet.

I’m 80% there with the wallet design (and will try and give you a “sneak peek” soon…) — and now at the stage where YOUR input into the final design can be critical!

So let me know exactly what you want …or …what you don’t want …what annoys you …what you’d like …big …small …hold four cards …hold twelve cards …hold cash …material …basically, give me a brain dump!

Thank you in advance for your input. 🙂

Titanium Prototype Mini-Giveaway

Here’s the deal…

There’s just four days left until the next Kickstarter project launch.

I would like to run some AWESOME giveaways on my own website during the project – but I would like to do a “test” of the service first.

Here’s where YOU come in…

You can win this truly one-of-a-kind, fully-functional, fully-titanium key-holder prototype in the next day or so while this competition runs.

There are a few ways to enter (Tweet, Like on Facebook, answer a question, …) and the more ways you enter the greater the chance of winning you have 🙂

If this mini-giveaway goes well then I will be offering some very cool stuff in the same way during the kickstarter campaign (and maybe this could be something I do more of in general!)

Here’s what you can win…

Titanium Key-Holder Mini-Giveaway

Fully Titanium Prototype (I’ve Been Holding Out On You..)

This may shock you…

The prototype in the pictures below is around a year old!

Yes, I’m serious. I’ve been testing this prototype off and on for a loooooong time now.

Here’s the story:

I wanted to provide countersunk screws with it (so it would be super pocket-friendly). However, I just tried some of the custom screws from the Rabbit key-holder on it, and it’s looks and performs VERY well.

The problem with countersinking the titanium screws is that I need to ship allen/hex keys with it. I don’t mind this – but it just adds another level of complexity. I really like the idea of just using coins (or whatever else you’ve got laying around) to open-and-close the screws.

My confession:

This key-holder is a lot like others that have come on the scene over the last year or two. As a result I’m not super-excited about it’s originality – although I can say it is:

  • Fully-Titanium (…yes, every single part of it apart from the o-rings)
  • Custom “Big Slot” Screws (…so you can use coins to open-and-close it)
  • Can Accept Any Key Length (…because of the “offset” design you can add any sized keys you like)
  • Can Hold Anywhere From One or Two Keys Up To Twelve or Fourteen (…you can also add USB Drives, etc.)

Any thoughts on this design? …would LOVE to here ’em! 🙂

P.S. Oh …and the blurred-out parts of some of the images may or may not be an almost-finished Kickstarter prototype about to be launched in the next few weeks! 😉

The Reviews Are In! (Well, ONE of them…)

I think you’ll like this…

A Kickstarter Backer, Mark Bakas, of my first product (the ViperFish) has uploaded a video of the unboxing of it.

You’ll find this interesting (although, personally, I found it fascinating).

I spent a lot of time putting the ViperFish (including the packging, etc.) together — and so it’s great to see how it is received.

The current run of ViperFish is shipping within 24 hours so there’s still time for you get yours here: ViperFish

Mark’s unboxing of his ViperFish  (thank you Mark!)…

Why I’m A Miserable FAILURE…

It’s prototype time!

Want to see a failed prototype? Then check this out…

Here’s the deal:

As it currently stands I’m putting this prototype on hold. But, I know from experience, if people (that means YOU) want something then I will get comments and emails about it.

Will be interesting to see what interest there is on this one as it’s very different to what you’ve seen before from me. 🙂

Oh, one last thing… Continue reading…

“Behind The Scenes” (…Rabbit and ViperFish Update!)

Here’s a strange thing…

It doesn’t matter how many projects or products or such I do – I always, ALWAYS forget how quickly things tend to come together near the end.

A few days ago everything seemed so far away (although still coming together as planned – but perhaps a little behind schedule).

Then, as if by magic, I’m just days away from shipping the Rabbit™ for the Kickstarter project.

Not only that – but the ViperFish™ is almost ready to go too (available here: ViperFish ).

The good and bad thing is…

I still hold down a full-time job so everything is done in my spare time. Last night, for example, I came home at 6pm and was up until around 12am doing packing and such. It’s crazy how long it takes when there is more than a handful of any one thing to be done!

Oh, and importantly, I still went out for an hour-long walk during this time. Yeah, I know, it’s got nothing to do with anything (you just want Rabbit and ViperFish™ updates, right?) – but, I’m telling you this anyway…

Taking time out (especially when you “don’t have time”) for walking or some such relaxing activity really is like re-charging yourself. I used to hear people say things like this and always thought, “I’ll do it when I have time”.

The problem is… there will never be time.

I’ve been busier than ever these last few weeks …but I’ve also made sure (and by this I mean forced myself) to take a decent walk each night when I get home …even if I’m telling myself I just don’t have time.

I literally force myself to go for a walk. And, after each walk, I feel physically and mental “re-charged”. But, longer term, it’s helping with healthier eating and generally a better state of mind (if that doesn’t sound too “new age” 😛 ).

Okay, okay. Enough of this walking stuff!

Let’s get down to business… Continue reading…

Weird Titanium “Art” For You…

It’s easy to make functional products…

Making a functional bottle-opener …or a pocket-tool …or a key-holder is super-simple. I’m serious here.

But, there’s another side to this:

Trying to go beyond that and ensure it’s beautiful, simple, practical (a very different thing to “functional”), make-able (is this even a word? …basically what I mean is: can it be made?), elegant, and so on — well, that’s a different game entirely!

I try to engineer beauty (in one form or another) into everything I create. It’s easy to go from nothing to something functional …but getting from this “something functional” to include all the things I mentioned above … now that takes countless hours of frustration, stress, head-banging-against-wall and throwing away 99.9% of the ideas I try. (…and I bet you thought I just pulled this stuff out of thin air!)

One last thing…

Before I get to the real reason for this post, I’ll let you in on a little “insider” secret (well, one of my secrets at least):

“The simpler a product looks …then, almost always, the more time and effort and work and frustration has gone into getting it to that stage”

Okay, so, there is beauty and art in what I create (well, I like to think so at least!) …but there’s also beauty in the process itself.

I’m talking specifically about the titanium “off-cuts” from what I produce.

Maybe it’s just me and my obsessive-compulsive personality traits – but I find these kinds of things beautiful: Continue reading…
