SCANDAL: Cogent Gets Ripped-Off!

It’s finally happened…

Took a little longer than I thought – but, well, take a look at this:

A poor ViperFish "copy" found on eBay...

How cool is that?

Someone thought the ViperFish™ was cool enough to copy the design and manufacture it (although they’ve really missed a lot out …well, they did it in hum-drum stainless-steel for a start!). I take it as a huge compliment. It’s flattering.

But here’s the thing…

Their “copy” is not even close to the original ViperFish™. In fact, they’ve missed a lot of the important stuff that makes the ViperFish™, well, The ViperFish™!

Here’s some of the things they’ve missed:

  • Made from Grade 5 Titanium
  • Laser-engraved “ViperFish” logo
  • Awesome packaging (like you’ve never seen before!)
  • Flawless Matte finish
  • Unconditional lifetime guarantee
  • …and a ton of other stuff.

It’s a real shame for someone who stumbles across this “copy” of the ViperFish™ and buys it.

They may think it’s the best thing since sliced-bread …yet they would have no idea the high-end, original ViperFish™ is available right here (…and for a reassuringly much higher price than the $5 they paid!)

Is there a lesson here?

Yes, I believe so. We’ve all heard it before – but it really is true…

You get what you pay for in life (…especially if it’s titanium! 😛 )

Time to call your lawyer !.. 🙂

  • Peter Caldwell says:

    I’m glad I have a genuine ViperFish!

  • Sven says:

It’s both a shame and an honor to get your viperfish being copied. I am glad that my original one is much better and I hope everyone else sees that the same and they will not assist these thieves.
    All the best
    Sven

  • Tactical Keychains says:

I posted a youtube video about my ripoffs and threw it on my main page. You acted faster than I thoughtafter I sent you that email. I’ve had these copies for 6 months, but lately they are getting really bad.

  • Jordan says:

That really sucks. Did you have a design patent on it? I wonder which of your designs are going to show up next.

  • Peter v eijndhoven says:

Congrats for such a quick copy. I agree it is a bad copy but anyhow…. It is your design. And it is better! Hope you have patented yours??
    Thanks Magnus for the warning

    • As I had mentioned in reply to Jordan… I have no patent …nor a plan patent it. There is very little you can do to stop this kind of copying. But, hey, at least I’ve produced something worth copying. 🙂

  • Anne Macdonald says:

It looks exactly like what it is……cheap and nasty!

  • Joe w says:

It looks hastily put together, rough edges etc. I’m sure it will only last a few uses before the edges get rounded.

A credit to you sir Magnus for producing such an exquisite tool.

  • Ian Stearns says:

Looks like that Chinese company also ripped off Brad’s and Jeff Morin’s designs too. You just can’t get quality for cheap! It’s flattery and that’s the positive way to look at it but it’s a bit infuriating too.

It’s sad that those buying these knock-offs are fueling these counterfeits and if they don’t know that they are counterfeit then they are missing out on the quality built product that the originals are.

Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done. There is no law in china for knock offs and you will
Spend more energy trying to chase these people down.

I’m just glad I was apart of helping being the original Viperfish to reality and have a quality product in hand!!

  • Ben says:

Think you should find them and give them a smack round their chops. Bet it looks nothing like the picture too, the wrench holes don’t even fit properly.

  • Out of interest…

I really am genuinely not too bothered about this kind of low-quality copying of Cogent products.

It’s just not worth spending the time to do anything about this. I much prefer concentrating on producing more products, better products and building, maintaining and strengthening relationships with dedicated customers.

If it was a better quality copy, in titanium, etc. …then THAT would get into the area where such a product would be affecting Cogent.

However, the type of person who would buy a cheap, $5 stainless-steel tool like that …I can pretty much guarantee is not the type of person who would invest in an original ViperFish™ (and this is demonstrated by the comments above).

Thought I’d make my thoughts on this matter clearer. 🙂
