Today is a photo day…
Okay, so I’m hugely pushed for time (gotta take a road trip today …a few hours each way along a very, VERY uppy-downy-lefty-righty road 😀 ).
Usually I take all my own photos …mainly for speed and getting new products and ideas out as fast as possible. They’re not great – but they get the job done.
However, I’ve had my Sister take some photos of titanium goodies — and she’s done all the fancy-pants processing on them — and I thought I’s share some of them with you.
So, today is a detailed look at the HangKey™ Pocket- Clip:
Thought I’d show you what happens most of the time (when designing)…
Believe it or not – but a lot of the designing I do fails (yes, I know, you’re thinking, “Magnus, surely this can’t be so?”).
Well, I have to ‘fess up here …yes, it really is true.
Some designs I start from scratch (after playing around with them in my head for a while) – and others are where I take a couple of ideas and try and make them work together.
But, here’s the thing…
Quite often, when trying to merge two designs, they don’t really want to be “friends”. And, today, I want to show you the evolution (and ultimate failure) of one of these processes.
Thought you’d find this interesting…
I mean – the design will work.
But it looks like half a fish.
It just looks weird.
Here’s the problem…
I’ve got more ideas than I know what to do with.
Yes, not all of them have “home run” potential (and, hell, a lot of them are just flat-out bad ..or simply won’t work) – but many do.
You probably already know this, but:
Almost everything I produce has its roots feedback or comments received from you.
In fact, you know on those nature documentaries where you see the lion in the long grass …super-focused …ready to pounce? …well, it’s kinda like that for me on comments and feedback from you.
I’m super-focused on everything I read in emails and comments. Yes, I know, you may have sent me an email with an idea (and I most likely replied) – but you never heard back from me since. I understand if you think it went unnoticed. But, I can assure you, nothing goes unnoticed.
Case in point:
The HookUp™ Clips were a direct result of a comment I read (or it might have been an email) where someone mentioned a particular titanium carabiner that had broken on them after a while. I got to thinking about his issue… and, well, three months later and the HookUp™ Clips were launched on Kickstarter.
Okay, so here’s what today’s post is all about…
I found this in “Magnus’ Big Box of Crazy Titanium Prototypes”:
The idea seemed good in my head. And still does to some degree – but definitely needs a few changes.
Functionality wise it’s good (but does need to be “beefed up” a little). It’s also a bit beat-up looking because I carried it around for a while when I first made it.
Obviously it’s meant to be a split-ring and clip in one – and I reckon it kinda works.
Thought I’d throw this out there for you to either…
a) Sing my praises
b) Feed me to the lions
Seriously though …as I talked about earlier in this post – I thrive on feedback and what YOU tell me.
Hit me with it…
You may not know this, but…
One of the BIGGEST problems I currently have in the production side of my titanium products is stopping the various parts “sticking” together when in the tumbler (as well as to the sides of the tumbler).
I haven’t yet found a “magic pill” solution because the products I produce are of various sizes and shapes. And, if they don’t have a hole through them, then it gets really tricky.
Anyway, I’ll get to the point…
I recently made a bit of a breakthrough (still at the testing stage though) with this. Woohoo!
I designed a little clip-type-thingy that would go through the holes in titanium parts. They had to be able to clip on quickly and easily. Oh, and they also had to be able to clip off quickly and easily too.
This little part was made out of titanium (obviously :-D) and, well, blow me down with a feather – turns out they look like cool split-ring-type-things …and, so far, they function like a hog!
So, I’ve just replaced all my split-rings on my key-chain with these as a trial. And, well, the results so far are kinda damn exciting.
Also, I’m gonna name these now (in case they turn into an actual product I produce and anyone decides to pilfer my idea :-P).
Take a look at the SnakeBite™:
These are in no way a final design (remember: these were only for the purpose of stopping titanium parts sticking together in my tumbler).
Would love to hear your thoughts on this… (good, bad and ugly)
Oh, one more thing…
You kinda “twist” these to get your keys (or whatever it is) to slip on and off them. I’ll see if I can do a video of them soon.
This could go really badly…
I just spent an OBSCENE amount of time polishing the latest Cogent creation …the SeaHorse™.
The result — even if I do say so myself — is unlike anything I’ve seen in a long time!
In case it’s hard to tell from the photos – the SeaHorse™ is around 65mm (2 1/2″) long and made from 3.5mm thick Grade 5 titanium.
It’s STRONG. I haven’t tested it fully yet for strength – but, believe me, it’s SOLID.
Here’s the problem:
I don’t want to make any more …because the time and effort involved to get the titanium like this is unreal!
But, hey, I’m a helluva nice guy – and you’ve been good to me 🙂
So here’s the deal…
If there is enough interest — and by this I mean if I get enough comments and emails demanding I produce it — then my back is against the wall and I’ll do it. It’s a true one-of-a-kind piece.
It blows my mind how something that looks so damn cool …can still manage to perform 100%! But, hey, that’s Cogent Industries for ya. 🙂
So, let me know what you think…
P.S. I secretly hope the SeaHorse™ is a “flop” – because I want to own the only one like it! (…ain’t I a big ol’ meanie? :-P)
P.P.S. The price will most likely be in the $80 to $90 area – which is probably a bit of a bargain to be brutally honest with you. Should really be asking a couple of hundred for the work that goes into producing this highly-polished master-piece!
You know it’s funny…
Quite often, you have a bright idea …you make it come to life …and it works out just as planned.
Then there are other times when — even though it makes perfect sense in your head — you bring it from idea to it’s physical manifestation …and it’s kinda different.
Actually, scratch that, it’s waaaaaay different!
Today I’m going to reveal one of these such “ideas”.
Feast your eyes on what I’m tentatively calling the “Pincer™”:
Yes, you got it, I merged tweezers with HookUp™ clip!
Here’s the thing…
Even though this design currently kinda freaks me out …I think it’s starting to grow on me a little.
I’d really like to hear your thoughts on this …because, well, a lot of what I create (and don’t create) comes from direct feedback from YOU.
I’m serious (hell, the Rabbit™ key-holder concept was born out of Backer comments during the ViperFish™ project).
One last thing…
It performs very well! I’ve had it on my key-chain for the last few weeks.
It’s finally happened…
Took a little longer than I thought – but, well, take a look at this:
How cool is that?
Someone thought the ViperFish™ was cool enough to copy the design and manufacture it (although they’ve really missed a lot out …well, they did it in hum-drum stainless-steel for a start!). I take it as a huge compliment. It’s flattering.
But here’s the thing…
Their “copy” is not even close to the original ViperFish™. In fact, they’ve missed a lot of the important stuff that makes the ViperFish™, well, The ViperFish™!
Here’s some of the things they’ve missed:
It’s a real shame for someone who stumbles across this “copy” of the ViperFish™ and buys it.
They may think it’s the best thing since sliced-bread …yet they would have no idea the high-end, original ViperFish™ is available right here (…and for a reassuringly much higher price than the $5 they paid!)
Is there a lesson here?
Yes, I believe so. We’ve all heard it before – but it really is true…
You get what you pay for in life (…especially if it’s titanium! 😛 )
Okay, here’s the deal…
I thought it was about time to give you another update.
But, the problem is, as I’m starting to write this I have absolutely no idea what to write about.
I’m serious here! I typically have a ton of things buzzing around my mind …but today there is just NOTHING.
You’ve experienced this before, right? No creativity. No ideas. And perhaps even no motivation. It seems to be a natural ebb and flow of how our brains work as humans.
Sometimes we feel like we’re brain-dead …and other times we’re fizzing, bubbling and ready to explode with ideas. I’m sure there are “triggers” to help force our brains to become creative or motivated with a flick-of-a-switch. But I’ve not found it yet! (Although the closest I’ve experienced is John Cleese’s excellent talk on creativity here)
So, here you are…
You’re reading this and perhaps thinking, “Magnus, you can’t fool me! You’re saying you don’t know what to write about, but I secretly know you’ve got something awesome to tell me!”
Seriously, I don’t. I’m writing this for purely selfish reasons. 🙂
I’m having one of those “non-creative” and “no motivation” days. They are unavoidable. So, what I decided to do is write. Or, more specifically, write this exact update to you.
You might like this:
The #1 reason for writing this to you is because it’s therapeutic (and you thought I did it purely for your benefit? …well, okay, there is a bit of that too!). Writing can often be “a massage for the mind”. I’m serious.
Writing is one of those things that focuses your mind and can get you out of a “mental slump”. And I’m not talking Shakespeare here! (hell, look at this last sentence, I started it with the word “And” …this would make any English teacher shudder!).
You WILL like this:
The #2 reason for sitting down and writing is because it’s important to just do something.
Whether it’s writing …or designing titanium products …or whatever …actually doing something (anything!) is the absolute best way to start when you don’t know where to start.
Want an example?
Well, what I’ve just written to you is a perfect example. The title of this article (can I call it an article?) has only just come to me just now: “What To Do …When You Don’t Know What To Do!”
But, here’s the thing…
Just 20 minutes ago I had no idea what to write about – but I just started typing. Somehow, as if by magic, your brain starts to get “into gear”.
I know, you may not be convinced, but next time you’re “stuck” or not “in the zone”. How about you just go for it and start. Try it …for me! 🙂
Talk to you soon,
P.S. One more thing… We’ve almost reached $30,000 in funding on the Titanium HookUp™ Project on Kickstarter. Unbelievable!
P.P.S. The three current products on my website have been selling like hotcakes …so, in case you somehow missed them 🙂 …check out the HangKey™ key pocket-clip/dangler …the PryMal™ minimalist pry-bar …and the ViperFish™ multi-function pocket-tool.
You may not believe this, but…
I’ve had more requests from people (via Kickstarter) to produce a wallet than anything else. And I think I know why!
The main reason is because, although there have literally been one or two hundred wallets on Kickstarter (yes, I have seen every one of them!), there has not been a single one that ticks all the right boxes for most folks.
Personally, I have found this to be the case. Like I said, I’ve seen every wallet on Kickstarter – but not a single one has been close to what I NEED. Very frustrating. Have you found this?
Here’s where YOU come in…
I have been working on a wallet for some time now – and finally have the main concept done (…as well as a VERY functional prototype).
What YOU need to do is tell me exactly what you want in a wallet.
I’m 80% there with the wallet design (and will try and give you a “sneak peek” soon…) — and now at the stage where YOUR input into the final design can be critical!
So let me know exactly what you want …or …what you don’t want …what annoys you …what you’d like …big …small …hold four cards …hold twelve cards …hold cash …material …basically, give me a brain dump!
Thank you in advance for your input. 🙂
Comment below or email or message me…
Here’s the deal…
There’s just four days left until the next Kickstarter project launch.
I would like to run some AWESOME giveaways on my own website during the project – but I would like to do a “test” of the service first.
Here’s where YOU come in…
You can win this truly one-of-a-kind, fully-functional, fully-titanium key-holder prototype in the next day or so while this competition runs.
There are a few ways to enter (Tweet, Like on Facebook, answer a question, …) and the more ways you enter the greater the chance of winning you have 🙂
If this mini-giveaway goes well then I will be offering some very cool stuff in the same way during the kickstarter campaign (and maybe this could be something I do more of in general!)
Here’s what you can win…
And here’s how to enter…
