5 Cool Titanium Things I WANT To Make…

Here’s something weird…

A couple of years ago I had never even seen titanium in real life… and had certainly never heard of Kickstarter.

And yet, I’m now running my eighth titanium-based Kickstarter project: The HangKey – Ultimate Titanium Pocket-Clip.

Not only that, but…

I have more ideas for crazy titanium (and even non-titanium) products than I don’t have even near enough capacity for (in terms of time and actual machines).

And so here’s a few things for you to think about (and perhaps tell me in the comments below if you’d be interested in them).

Oh, wait, before I get into that. I must tell you this damn frustrating thing first…

I’m not sure if you know this – but I always seem to have car trouble (regardless of the car). I’m serious.

In the last few months I’ve had an overheating engine (twice!). A puncture. Lost the “key” for my lock-nut wheels – so they were going to have to destroyed the wheels nuts so the wheel could be removed (but they couldn’t because the nuts had been put on squint by the garage!).Β  Another slow-leak on a brand new tyre (which is being fixed right now as I type this. I’m in a cafe). The list go on and on and on.

Anyway, here’s what this is about…

The recent slow-leaking tyre problem caused me to buy one of those small pumps that you plug into your cigarette lighter. You know, it’s like a mini air compressor.

I knew I was buying a little cheapo thing. It was just until I got my tyre fixed. But dear Lord!

This little thing was so rubbish it got up to about three quarters of what the tyre needed to be pumped up to… and just wouldn’t pump any higher. I left the thing for about 10 minutes pumping away… but no more air would go in.

But, here’s the funny thing:

Very occasionally I wonder why I go to extreme length to produce high-quality titanium products. Most of which could be regarded as “overkill” and perhaps even “over-engineered”.

But then, I’ll experience something like this disgustingly and shockingly cheap air compressor… and then feel like it’s my duty to keep making mad titanium products. And that’s what has inspired this post. πŸ˜€

So I’d like to run some begging-to-be-over-engineered product ideas past you.

A titanium letter-opener.

Now, admittedly, this may not sound too exciting. But I have a letter opener (it’s actually this one) and I use it every day. I just want to make my own one with my own take on it.

A “quick release” titanium gear tie.

I don’t like knots. My Father was a Fisherman for a while and so he knows knots. I should know knots. But I don’t.

What I want to be able to do is have a bunch of rope or paracord and be able to confidently (and quickly) tie down whatever I need to without a bunch of laughable knots barely holding everything together!

Insider Secret: I’ve been working on this for a long time and it’s one of the most difficult products I’ve attempted. Still persevering though!

(This is not titanium at all, but…)

An ultra-high-quality bomber-style bag.

Recently I received a Kickstarter Reward for a bomber-style bag project I supported.

To be fair it did look the same as it did in the project photos. The quality was okay (not great though). But, overall, it was just very thin and small and not quite what I was expecting.

My immediate reaction was, “Damn it. I’m going to make my own one of these. And it’s going to be totally over-engineered and people are going to say… ‘what the hell?!'” πŸ˜€

Hardcore carbon-fiber and titanium cases.

This is something I really, really, REALLY want to make.

I’m talking about rock-solid, drive-a-truck-over-them-if-you-want storage cases made from carbon-fiber and titanium.

They could hold anything you like… camera or medical equipment… laptops… toothbrush and toothpaste for travelling… whatever you want!

So, yeah, there’s my little bunch of ideas I’d like to do.

If there is anything I’ve missed then I’d love to hear your thoughts below…. πŸ™‚

  • Rambo says:

I am one of your backer in your recent projects in Kickstarter. I just start following your blog.

I think I have very similar experience on those under-engineered products. Sometime they are disappointing as it require you to spend extra time on fixing it. I really appreciate people that is able to create something that is working nicely.

    Some comments on your ideas:

#1 Please don’t make it too big. And keep it minimalist. Waiting for your over-engineered version.

#2 I though I am the only one that have problem with knobs, truly support on it.

#3 About bag, I am always want to have a camera bag that work. Sometime I would like to carry a SLR body with hand grip and a standard zoom lens. Those bags in the market are either too bulky (maybe the camera itself is to bulky) or it don’t have enough protection if I put it in a normal backpack.

#4 why not. Best if it is portable. Given the size, sounds like will be expensive. I just hope I can afford one.

Extra #5: Beside keys, headphone (or earbuds) should be the next top EDC item that need something to hold it. A cable clip or a storage solution is highly needed. Of course in titanium.

Extra #6: I am a Buddhist and always have prayer beads around as EDC. They come with different materials. I just think a titanium one will be good.

  • Joe w says:

Bomber bag! I think I know which bomber project you backed, I didn’t back it but I was sorely tempted, I didn’t because I felt I would be disappointed like you say you slightly are. The kick starter project was very polished though!

    Bomber bag me haha

  • David G says:

As for #2, have a look at the ‘Fishbone’ it was a Kickstarter I supported, a while back, that was specifically for paracord, and in Titanium too.

  • Bob Gelb says:

I like #1, if its classic, simple, and very attractive.
    #2,3,4, not sure,
    #2 I don’t understand,
#3 lots of bags currently available
#4 you would probably not do well with this, the price would be dictated by the quantity produced, and big bag makers, like Tumi, would be your competition….

    • Yeah, #2 is hard to explain (which I think is why it’s so hard to design)

Your #3 and #4 confirm that I should make these. They already exist and therefor must be popular. πŸ™‚

  • John says:

I would like to see a Ti version (of the body of this design) of this in different widths–ie. 3/4″, 1″ and 1 1/2″….useful for lashing pack web straps and electronic cables

  • John says:

I use a titanium cigar tube to hold my carry toothbrush….I cannot put in carryon….it is bigger than a kubotan and TSA will confiscate it….I use it for local trips when I can drive and stay away from home

  • John says:

I would like to see bento style box made out of titanium…useful for snacks or small meds to carry while travelling….a titanium bento style box would be near indestructible….

  • John says:

I would like a good set of tags (high visibility and clearly marked) to mark indicate emergency meds….in an emergency someone else is typically rummaging through your bag for any meds….clearly marked and attachable tag for med pouch or dopp kit carrying meds would be very useful…for instance….I carry epi pen and benadryl due to beesting allergy. I know where meds are, but if someone is looking for my med pouch to help me, time is wasting….

    • That’s smart John for sure. I’ve been asked a few times for titanium tags (and other medical gear). Have put it to the back-burner so far… but thinking I should bring it forward.

  • John says:

I would like more metal projects, esp. Titanium….other bag companies out there…Saddleback leather, Timbuktu, Kifaru, Tactical Tailor, Eagle, Grey Ghost….competitive field with their versions of daily packs, carry on and duffels…

    • I reckon there is room for another bag. Because, just like with The One titanium pen, it will be designed exactly as I want it (which, quite often, turns out to be how a lot of other people want it! πŸ˜€ )

  • Christopher says:

A high quality bomber bag and a carbon fiber equipment case would both be very interesting.

May the Force be with you.

  • John says:

would small metal–aluminum or titanium version of this cost prohibitive….I would like to see small version in metal to use to secure cables…..I use these all of the time to secure cables and home projects (depending on size of cable, tubing or hose)….

    • I see things like this – which I could definitely do my own take on it…

However, if it’s going to go behind a PC or TV/Stereo then it’s unlikely many people will gain any benefit from it being titanium (like they would from titanium key-chain type products where weight makes a difference).

  • Theo says:

    1. Titanium letter opener with a ruler!
    2. I’m a paracord junkie so this would be a done deal for me.
    3. Bomber bag would be interesting.
    4. Titanium or carbon fiber anything would catch my attention. I’m always looking for storage in my backpack and car.

  • Kyle Hinkebein says:

I would LOVE to see a Carbon-Fiber/Titanium hard case!! MAKE IT DUDE!!!!

    • Yes, I want to see it too!

I’ve searched the internet high and low… but can’t find anything like what I envisage. Simply: an (fairly) high-end and insanely-strong carbon-fiber based case(s).

  • RyanTV says:

The letter opener is cool. I’m sure you would design one way cooler than the one you linked to.

I’d be interested in seeing the gear tie design. I like the idea.

I’m not a huge fan of bomber bags, but if that is your thing, I say go for it. I love high quality bags in general.

And cases are cool. I’d imagine the cost will be pretty prohibitive on these in comparison to industry-standard pelican style cases.

What I’m really wanting is your flip out key holder. I don’t care how may spacers I have to deal with etc. I have a KeySmart that I use every day and it was kind of a PITA to put together, but totally worth it. To have a Magnus designed titanium version would be a must-own.

  • John says:

a titanium/carbon fiber version of something like this for glasses and sunglasses…..

  • Stephen says:

    Hi Magnus,

Yes, cheaply made stuff is a travesty!

That’s a nice Ti letter opener you’re using, lol πŸ™‚

Look forward to seeing / getting your take.

Gear tie is good idea that does other things too (not too much) and could be key fob.

Recommend steering away from bags in favor of the principle of focus. This also applies somewhat to large-format cases.

    Maybe small cases?

    To impossibly high standards πŸ™‚

    • Not just a travesty… it’s depressing and frustrating.

The real issue is that it’s difficult to actually FIND quality products. The majority of the population are happy with what are, let’s face it, inferior products… and so that’s what businesses stock and sell.

      To everyone else…

Steve here is the fellow that made the titanium letter-opener I linked to above.

It’s the letter-opener I’ve been using for at least a year or so. I use it every day (well, every day that I get mail :-D).

      • Stephen says:

        Hi all,

Thanks Magnus. It’s an honor to know you consider the Tiletto worthy to use on a daily basis πŸ™‚

Same here! In that regard, while using your impossibly brilliant TiShaker salt ‘n pepper shakers today, the idea popped that, from a different perspective, these are almost shot glasses!

These would certainly appeal to a number of people!

Am thinking that’s a good enough idea to drink a toast to, lol!

  • Ben Watson says:

Terry Prattchett says if you believe in a ‘car god’ then even if you are only 1 believer then that God exists! The fact that I have been a believer for the last year as my car has been badly behaved seems like there are at least 2 of us…
Anyway back to titanium stuff, I could do with some bigger clip hooks as I use my belt to hook my dogs lead on but it’s too big and clumsy ( being disabled she goes everywhere with me) + I need hooks to get other stuff rather than dig down into my many pockets! Love the stuff you’ve done so far.

    • YES! I actually have some larger HookUp clips ready to go (i.e. I’ve had then prototyped and I just need to make more of them). But I’m so busy it’s a priority thing just now.

  • Bob Lukach says:

How about a titanium EDC pocket knife! I know your take on this would be killer Magnus. All the other ideas you have are great too. I wish you success in all you do!

    • Yeah, I’d like to do it for sure… but I’m super-apprehensive of shipping 100 of them… and then finding out that half of them are getting caught-up in Customs.

      The other thing is…

In terms of making a knife… I’d really be a small fish in a very BIG pond (in terms of quality, design, etc etc). The knives out there are unreal.

  • Enrique says:

#1: Sounds nice but I’m not shure if I’d go for it before some other gadgets you’ve built.
#2: This one I think I would like to see. Do you have something like these (https://www.niteize.com/product/Figure-9-Small.asp) in mind?
#3: Not sure as I prefer backpacks, but I’d like to see the idea before making a stronger remark.
#4: Sounds amazing (and if you really like the project, go for it!), but I do agree that it sounds like it could be really expensive.

I’m not sure if it’s a bad thing to put this here, but I’d like to see your take on something like this edc tool… (http://atwoodknives.blogspot.mx/2014/11/roll-bars.html)

    Sorry about your car problems!

    • The gear-tie concept is quite different to the one you linked to.

With the Atwood “Roll Bar”… man, that’s a clever little design.

I’d like to make something like that – but it’s a little tricky without blatantly poaching the idea. Not something I’d do.

Maybe I could use it as inspiration for something that’s different enough.

  • matt. says:

Concerning your #4 Hardcore titanium and carbon fiber cases idea… Would you consider an extra, extra large version of your pill pots? Something like the L22, but the size of a Fosters can?

Having a large, sturdy, waterproof container for all of the little things you take camping (first aid, matches, water pills, zip ties, cell phone, contact lens case, etc) that get smashed around by the 3rd day would be great. And an extra large version of your Stack28 design could be used for cooking ingredients or who knows what else.

Just a thought that cases don’t need to be for a single item like a phone OR be big pelican style cases. There’s a middle ground that doesn’t really have any competition (I’ve been looking).

  • Sylvia says:

I was just wondering why no one has made a titanium chapstick holder that you can attach to a keychain. Most people carry them in their EDCs….

  • Tim says:

I know this is pretty late, but I kept putting it off, figuring someone else would surely bring it up.

If you are still looking for things to make, please, please, please consider thread snips (small sewing scissors).

or do a google image search for “sewing snips” to get an idea of what I mean.

They could be pretty similar in size / shape / form factor to the titanium tweezers (which are awesome, btw). Maybe a bit larger?
