Embarrassing 3D Designing

This is the second “behind the scenes” update for you (since you’re signed-up to my exclusive spinner “Launch List”).

If you missed the previous update, then click here to view it.

Rather than a video – today I thought I’d share some screenshots of some 3D CAD work I’ve just done.

Now, before I continue, a quick confession:

I’ve never used this software (or done much 3D designing before) – so please don’t be too disappointed by the lack of “fancy-ness” of what you see below. I’m learning fast and the final design will be done in the next few days (which, of course, YOU will get early access to!)

Right, let’s design…

#1 – Start in 2Dfidget-spinner-1

#2 – Extrude to 3D

#3 – Try some “beveling”

#4 – Try A LOT MORE beveling

#5 – Something went wrong and I don’t know how to fix it (and it looks like something from Star Wars. Jeez.)

#6 – Let’s do some work on the button instead

#7 – Remove some material from around the button area

#8 – Let’s try some more beveling (again)

#9 – Right, getting the hang of this. Let’s start again from fresh

#10 – Let’s bevel this sucker and develop the button a little

Not sure what you’ll think of what I shared above – so I shared it anyway. If it’s not the kind of think you want to see (i.e. you just want videos or something) …then do let me know …I accept any and all feedback whether it’s good, bad or downright ugly!

You’re probably see me mention it on YouTube, FaceBook, Instagram and such – but the design is nearly finished and should be cnc-prototyped in the next few weeks.

And, of course, you’re going to be getting the information before everyone else by being on “Lauch List”.

Any questions?

  • Ryan Lough says:

I think that is very good for a first try!

  • Cole says:

I think concave center would feel very nice and provide great grip. But can catch on fingers when spinning. But it’s just a idea

  • Mark says:

    Good effort

  • Robert Ferguson says:

Magnus, I prefer the drawings to the videos as they are more descriptive of what you’re working on.

  • Stas says:

I think, you neewd check geometry on wrong vertex or two and more ponts in one coordinats. good luck

  • Craig says:

So will the final still have a protruding button so it can spin on a flat surface – remember the Me Pry little drill grips – I may be wrong but think it will look awesome – also if it is an “EDC” will you have a spot to hook up to on a keychain? Just my 2c worth – love your work Magnus and I’ll be ready to back the kickstarter for both the own and spinner project plus an order for some other stuff – keep me posted on the Timascus limited run of products πŸ™‚

  • Craig says:

That’s pen not “own” – dang spell check :S

  • David says:

Just make it already I want one πŸ™‚

  • Danny says:

Practise makes perfect! I really want to buy one now!

  • Adam says:

    I think it looks sick πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  • Hannah says:

Photos and descriptions are great! Really complements the videos.

  • Rene says:

I like the clean lines and looks of this hand spinner, like something from Star Trek, Classy, I would have to have it polished, no backsies! Think about polished with tamascus buttons, or supper conductor buttons, or even blue abalone inserts in the buttons as an upgrade option. This would be my first spinner and I would buy it because of how sleek and upscale it looks!!!,

  • Leslie says:

Looks great! Even the Star Wars model. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

  • Blane says:

Magnus… I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic!! Just count me in. Also, imagine the possibilities for you now that you are becoming familiar with the 3D software. Sky is the limit Bud!!

  • Chris says:

I like big bottons and I cannot lie.

  • Mike Miles says:

It l@@ks fantastic on the first and overall. Compared to the simple Bryce3D I used to work with, I’d say it’s quite a bit good. Thanks for the peep brother and please keep on keeping us posted! \m/

  • Nicolas says:

How many ounces will the spinner weight? And what do you think the cost of the spinner will be?

  • Chris MacNamara says:

    Can’t wait for this spinner!!

  • Nick says:

This looks so polished I love it!

  • Colin says:

    Can’t wait to have one

Diggin it.. maybe a marble or a steel ball in the middle for the spin barring just a thought

  • Christopher J Forte says:

Hey, I think the concept for your main spinner is Awesome! I would love to see you produce these in the furure.. Also in your latest design video with the 3 spin caps, I think that is a Great design! I haven’t seen that done before..It would make a great spinner/ figet toy! Also maybe consider using tungsten carbide weights in the arms of a concept spinner (just an idea).. The extra weight would improve the spin time dramatically! And it would give your spinner a cool look while spinning.. Not many designers are doing this and it’s definitely a sought after design..Best of luck and I look forward to more designs.

  • angela says:

Honestly i think its impressive, as alot of people already said needs maybe some work, but i think it is bloody brilliant. Keep it up so i can buy one ! πŸ˜›
